False Teachers: Key Verses

It is important to know how to recognise false teachings and insincerity. These verses should help you.

1. Romans 16:17-18 Avoid those who cause divisions.
The truth causes divisions (John 7:43, John 9:16, John 10:19), but people who fight the truth also cause divisions. They do it through deception and emotionalism. You will notice that they offer no positive solution, only negative attacks. Avoid them.

2. 2 Thessalonians 3:6, 2 Thessalonians 3:11 Stay away from disobedient Christians.
Anyone who refuses to obey the teachings of Jesus should be regarded with suspicion in all that they teach. It will almost always lead to division and confusion.

3. 1 Corinthians 10:10, Hebrews 3:8-11, 2 Timothy 3:8 Don't talk behind people's backs.
It can be tempting to "murmur" about others in the community (especially leaders). But if you have a criticism, you should go to the person concerned and try to work it out. (Matthew 18:15-17). Do not let others murmur to you about fellow Christians either.

4. Titus 3:9, 2 Timothy 2:23 Avoid foolish questions.
When people question you, consider where it is leading. Do they acknowledge good answers, or are they just picking away in order to make trouble?

5. Titus 3:10 Don't waste time on people who just want to argue.
If argumentative people bring up new issues each time you give them the truth on a previous one, do not be too proud to simply walk away from them.

6. 1 John 4:1-2 Test the spirits.
This verse shows that it is not enough to say that Jesus is God. We need to acknowledge the historical Jesus of the Bible, and seek to obey him. Just saying "Lord, Lord" isn't enough.

7. 1 Corinthians 11:31 We need to judge ourselves.
Always start by judging your own spirit, to be sure you are being honest.

8. 1 Peter 4:17 Judgment must start with God's people.
The place where judgment must be strongest is amongst Christians.

9. Titus 1:16 Some teachers show by their actions that they don't know God.
Don't be sucked in by beautiful talk. If they're not walking the walk, their talk is just hot air.

10. 1 Thessalonians 2:3-6 Good teachers don't flatter.
A test of your sincerity is whether you will resist flattery and welcome criticisms that are based on the truth.
